Project Description

Telefónica is Spain’s national telephone company.  Agresa’s project at Telefónica could be divided up into several chapters. However, here we are going to present our work at the Rios Rosas plant, which is Telefónica’s central one. Agresa installed two 2500kVa generators which required very interesting features and specifications.

First of all, the project started off with some complications that had to be clarified; we had to cut off access to one of the main streets near the centre of Madrid, the generators had to be installed in a basement three floors below ground level, access to the building was complicated and the installations themselves were complex. However, the combination of these factors made the project particularly interesting and fun.

It is relatively easy to get permission from the City Council to cut off the street, but letting you work is much more complicated. In the end, we found a time slot (at night) and at a suitable weekend when we could carry out this loading and delivery.

Loading the machinery at the site is relatively straightforward, however, lowering it down three floors into a basement with a forklift that hasn’t been working at its full capacity for years and without any guarantee that it will work correctly, was a challenge. The forklift was also too small in size and weight for such tasks, which meant that we had to disassemble the equipment in order to lower the equipment in parts.

To lower the equipment successfully, we used a winch which had the necessary capacity and helped us to lower the equipment successfully. However, in order to move these machines, which weighed over 18,000kg, to their location, we used mini electric tanks. This made our job easier and more efficient.

At the same time, we unloaded dry coolers for the roof of the building onto the 4th floor. These dry coolers are large in volume, which is a necessary feature as this prevents vibrations and noises from being transmitted to the adjoining buildings.

The control and operating panels for this equipment was also unloaded.
In the following days, Agresa installed electrical fittings, gas outlet ducts and refrigeration pipes.

Due to the fact that this equipment had to be placed at a considerable distance from the cooling system, Agresa installed plate exchangers and high efficiency pumps in order to guarantee optimal cooling.

Finally, we wanted to ensure that both the installation and the equipment were in optimal working order. Therefore, we tested them on site with load bank testing and by verifying their correct operation.
